Weekly App Practical – Assistive Technology

We live in the digital era; technology changed our everyday life, especially assistive technology. Assistive technology reduces the need for formal health and support services, long-term care, and caregivers' work. Without assistive technology (AT), people are often excluded, isolated, and locked into poverty. However, assistive technology let them become a normal person. Essentially, new technologies allow students to take advantage of many of the same opportunities for success as other students—turning yesterday's disabled students into today's enabled students!

Students who struggle with learning can use AT to help with subjects like reading, writing, and math. The APP I will use for my students is Audible since I have a couple of students who has ADHD. Reading for them is stressful because they are having a hard time focusing. But they can listen to someone read that book to them instead.

Audible has thousands of titles in the Plus catalog, including Audible Originals, audiobooks, and podcasts, including exclusive series—no credits needed. It also allows you to download the books you want and change the reading speed. And most of the audible kids' books are free with membership.

I will set up a Reading station with a phone (my spare one with no sim card) which only has Audible, and Epic those two APP, a Bluetooth headphone, a sign-up sheet attaches with a pen in my classroom. And download the books require to read in Audible. This station is open to everyone in my classroom; students can sign up for the reading station first thing in the morning. Then, when the student did their session, they can call the next child whose name is on the list. Of course, the reading duration will be different based on their learning ability and reading level.  Using AT can help students become more confident and independent. That's because AT empowers people to do things for themselves, therefore , we should use more in our classroom to help more students learn well.
