Weekly App Practical - Student as Global Communicator

Weekly App Practical - Student as Global Communicator

Technology makes this world globalize; in a globalized world, effective communication is a necessity. Technology makes communication easier between people who live far away from each other. Like me, I can talk with my parents every week and see their faces in my phone. It would be magic for people who lived in 15 years ago. As globalization affects international business in almost every way possible, it also involves education to great extents. International education is on the rise as the demands of a globalized world bring the need for students to understand broader issues worldwide. Students, the future business leaders of tomorrow, have become more mobile than ever in search of global experiences and job opportunities overseas. I am the one who enjoys globalization education; globalization broadens my insight, enriches my life. I hope my students also can get this benefit. In my Montessori classroom, we are not allowed to use any device so far, but use my phone to play some radio or music is acceptable. Therefore, I want to try the app Radio Garden in my classroom.

"While I feel the Montessori curriculum does a wonderful job of laying the groundwork for future citizens of the world, a service like Radio Garden could be a fun and educational way to extend this knowledge and expose children to other cultures in an organic way."

                                                                                                                                      Brian Sullivan

Radio Garden allows you to listen to thousands of live radio stations world wide by rotating the globe. Every green dot repents a city or town; tap on it to tune into the radio stations broadcasting from that city. We can save our favorite stations for later listening. I love this app because I can listen to music and different language all around the world. I remember when I was young, I learn English from the radio. The U.S. is an immigration country; therefore, our classroom is pretty diverse. I think it is necessary to know each other's culture.

In my school, we celebrate United Nations Day every year, that is one of the celebrations children like the most; they are allowed to dress up to show their culture on that day and bring their exceptional authentic food to share with their friends. They also can get any things from their home that they want to show to their friend. I am thinking I will use Radio Garden when my students are doing their presentations. I will play the radio station either from their country or state. It offers everyone the opportunity to feel the different cultures listen to their different languages and the different music they sing.  Also, I will put some stations they like the most to my favorite to play them every morning before class or lunchtime.

Fostering global awareness and international collaboration in our classrooms are so beneficial to our students. It is developing the ability to respect and work with students from all backgrounds, cultures, and religions, learn a foreign language, and understand different nations and cultures. When our children understand those who are different from them, it helps build a more peaceful and civil society when they work collaboratively. Therefore, all schools should use modern technology to foster students' global awareness.
