Weekly App Practical - Student as Scribe

Weekly App Practical - Student as Scribe

In modern life, technology becomes an indispensable part in our life. However, at the Montessori school, I worked before, we are not allowed to use any device in the pre-k/k classroom before COVID. I wonder whether we will start to use some technology in our classroom. If it happened, I would like to choose Seesaw to help me communicate with my students and their families.

Seesaw is the platform for empowering students to demonstrate and share their learning. Students use powerful tools to create (take photos, video, write, draw, record voice), reflect, and demonstrate learning. When students share their learning in their Seesaw portfolio, teachers and families gain valuable insights into what their students know and can better support their development throughout the school year.

The reason I choose Seesaw is that everything I need/I wants all in Seesaw. Seesaw is an all-in-one APP. It has two versions, one for teachers and students; the other one is for parents. There are more highlight reasons below:

The teacher can engage families in conversations centered on student learning which I like most. In my perspective, parent-teacher relationships are crucial, and students will benefit from good and

  • Students will get benefits from a good and solid parent-teacher relationship. Parents, kids, and teachers are in a triangle relationship.

  • Teachers can see what students know and get ideas for activities in Seesaw. This feature I will use for formative and summative of my lesson. I know exactly where my students are; it's to follow their learning pace. Also, I may discover their interests and develop new lessons or teaching methods to meet their needs.

  • Families see their children's works and leave comments and encouragement. Most parents don't know what their kids do at school, even if they bring their "works" home. Parents do tour the classroom at Montessori school, but they have no idea about the teaching materials and some philosophy. And we only have 15mins parent-teacher conference per semester, but it's not enough. In Seesaw, parents can their kids' works and leave comments for them, encouraging kids to learn.

  • Celebrate and recognize student progress. Children do need celebration for their achievement, and I want to keep track of my student's progress daily and visually; Seesaw meets all our needs.

  • Students use Seesaw's intuitive tools to demonstrate learning in a portfolio; students have the ownership and choice. This match with UDL which meet almost all students' need.

  • Teachers control who can see what, and whether students and families can add likes or comments.

Seesaw allows students' voices to be heard by more than one person (teacher)and creates an authentic communication experience. Seesaw is a great APP. However, I will not allow my students to use it in class at school because I think students need to work on their fundamental skill (fine motor) at school. I prefer to use Seesaw as an assignment and our class community communication tool.

  1. Dongpo,
I like that you included information about home to school connection. Many families want to know what is happening at school but are busy with work. This is a great way for families to stay connected. You also included why you would not allow students to use during class time, it fits your school model and that is great!
